Garage Sales

Garage Sales

Garage sales are regulated by City Ordinance.  City Ordinance specifies that a  property can only have a total of 3 garage sales per calendar year, and each sale can last up to 3 days.  If the sale is cancelled due to weather or other act of God, City Hall must be notified and the sale can be rescheduled at a later date.  When a sale is cancelled due to these reasons, the cancelled sale will not count against the location as a sale.  Anytime a sale is held, a permit must be issued by City Hall to the property owner or the person having the sale prior to the date of the sale (City of Kilgore Code of Ordinances Chapter 20 Sec. 20-62).

City Ordinance requires that a permit must be issued by the City of Kilgore for any garage sales that occur within the city limits.  The permits are free and are available at City Hall.  The person holding the sale or the owner of the property where the sale is taking place must come to City Hall, fill out an application for a garage sale permit and be issued a permit prior to the date of the sale.  The permit must be displayed at the location of the sale and should be visible from the street.  Holding a garage sale inside the city limts without a permit is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine in accordance with section 1-9 (City of Kilgore Code of Ordinances Chapter 20 Sec 20-62).

City Ordinance prohibits the placement of temporary signs (garage sale signs) in certain locations.  Garage sale and Estate sale sign can not be placed on utility poles, traffic signs, in the street right of way or in road medians or traffic circles.  These signs can only be placed on private property but only after obtaining permission from the property owner.  Placing a temporary sign in any of the prohibited places is a Class C misdemeanor and is punishable by a fine.

Estate Sales

Estate sales must meet the same requirements under City Ordinance as garage sales.  These sales must obtain a permit for the sale and follow the same guidelines for sign placement.
